I hate the ribbon -- bring the menus back!

Hi TrueBrit,

Our company has created a product that brings back the familiar Office
2003 interface into Office 2007 so people could still transition to
Office 2007 which is a great product.

ToolbarToggle is a utility for Microsoft Office 2007: Choose the old
toolbars or the new Ribbon because ToolbarToggle is an exact replica
of the toolbar and menu system of Office 2003 that:

- Can float or dock anywhere;
- Has full drag-and-drop customization
- Use drag-and-drop to modify existing or create new toolbars /
menus;
- Add macros and AutoText as menu items or toolbar buttons;

ToolbarToggle is 100% compatible with Office 2007 and comes with a
free bonus feature called ToolbarToggle Lite which is a simpler
version that lets users have the option of placing the toolbar menu
system as a tab on the Ribbon itself.

That sounds great. I hated the GUI for Office 2007 beta. I don't really
have to have Office though. Word I do consider essential so someone should
make this toolbar toggle for Word 2007 also for those who just have Word or
Works Suite. I could not get used to Word 2007. It was horrible. So, I went
back to Works Suite 2006 which has Word 2002 and I won't be upgrading as
long as that awful GUI is there and as long as I cannot use the font of my
choice.

And how are we supposed to try this if we don't have Flash Player? I don't
allow that garbage on any of my computers. You should have html content on
your web page for those of us who are security and privacy minded and don't
use Flash Player.

Interestingly, I hated it too at first but now when I look at the previous
versions the UI looks odd and out-dated to me. I suspect what it comes down
to is it's all about what you get used to. :)

I am curious about that comment you made on changing the font - would you
mind expanding on this? Which font were you unable to change?

Please post this to the programmer who made the ribbon undo thingie - it is not Microsoft Office related and I doubt that they will take your request seriously if not sent to them directly.

That's exactly why I've been using it at home. The best time to get used to

My thoughts exactly!

Those who are turning to a menu bar/toolbar add-in or opting to not upgrade
because of the UI may find themselves left behind in the future. Now is the
time to make the transition and start getting up to speed. I know I
considered forgoing Office 2007 because I didn't like the new UI way back
when but it didn't take long to adapt and now I'm thankful I took the
plunge. :)

This is just one more reason to either use Open Office, go to Linux, go to a
MAC. Or, in my case, this may be my last computer. It's been an interesting
8 years but I'm getting bored. I'm 64 and disabled for many years so I don't
have to learn some new yucky way of writing business letters which I don't
have to do very often. I don't use anything in Works Suite except Word.
Works Suite 97 was worth the money. Works Suite 2002 and 2006 were not.
Vista is not worth the money. 98SE was fantastic. XP is ok ...Vista...no
way.

JoAnn Paules

I'm learning a little at a time. I've read people who keep saying they'll
get a Mac. find but I have to tell you, I've yet to see Macs used in a
business office. Maybe that's just coincidence, maybe not. Either way, I
have about 16 years until I can retire - I can't afford to be left behind.

If you intend to go to Linux, you will need a lot more computer savvy to configure and use its applications. Saying that you will use a MAC (you already do, on every connected device) tells me that you are not that savvy nor that ready for Linux. If you mean the computer, that is a Mac... there is a BIG difference.

No so. Every major Linux distribution for Intel/AMD CPUs includes
OpenOffice, FireFox and at least one CD music player in the standard
installation. Linux has become so SIMPLE that there are several Live
distributions (ones that can run straight from bootable CDs). Mounting
a flash drive may require a bit more sophistication, but several
distributions, most notably Ubuntu, provide substantial online help
facilities.

Oh what a clever rhetorical gambit!

Well, if they know as little about current Linux distributions as you
they wouldn't be ready for it.

Yes there is! Macs are much better.

You are so right. Linux even a year or so ago was rather daunting in VMWare
Workstation but now...Ubuntu has Firefox ready to go and a music player. I
dislike IE and Fx has been my default browser since Phoenix days many years
ago. I feel right at home in Ubuntu. The Live CDs are needed even if you
don't use Linux just so you can see when you have a problem with your
computer if it is Windows or your hardware. If everything is fine in Linux
then it is not your hardware. All Windows users should have a Live Distro.
Sure, there is still a considerable learning curve and I will need WINE to
be able to use the Proxomitron which I cannot give up but there are so many
who have bravely gone before me and will now help me and then I in turn will
help others.

Ironically, much of what holds me back is that I won't have my main interest
to post about daily if I move to Linux. I spend most of my time in Security
forums and am quite knowledgeable about various antivirus programs, HIPS
programs, etc. I'll feel lost when I don't have those concerns (except to a
very small degree) anymore. :D Plus, there are small things I will really
miss like 98SE desktop themes that I have working on XP (classic view of
course...I would never use XP cartoons for children view). But honestly, I
don't feel that most of us have a choice in a few years when XP is getting
close to being unsupported. It will be a Macintosh computer or moving to
Linux. Dell is my supplier and because of pressure from users like myself we
will soon be offered probably Ubuntu preloaded on Dells. Microsoft can't
stop Michael Dell from doing this (he no longer appears afraid of offending
Microsoft) and when it happens, everything will start to really change.

I don't know about that. It could be the industry too. I've been involved
with manufacturing for more than 25 years and never saw a Mac. My printer
uses one and so does my vet. Those are the only places I've seen them used.

You should go and visit print shops and graphic artists and see what
they work on. For pre-press work and high quality colour calibration
macs are hard to beat!

I strongly suspect you'd see them used in Apple stores and Apple's
Cupertino campus.

Macs are pretty common on most larger college and university campuses.
And they're more common than Wintel PCs in the entertainment industry.
