Installation problem - clip art related

G

grumpy_dad

Thank goodness its not just me! I am having the same issues only with an
added twist. having installed Office Student & teacher edition 2003 on both
our home PCs I have the Windows Installer/ Microsoft Office standard edition
2003 window issues + the clip-art (in Powerpoint)+ a problem with
stdole32.tlb (missing/damaged in Excel on Limited accounts) + the same
performance when I start Explorer up to browse the web ONLY ON 1 of the PCs.
The PCs both have identical users accounts, OS, security software and the
same mix of Admin and limited but on one computer the Limited accounts work
fine and on the other the problems are there. In fact I cannot get into
Powerpoint at all getting locked in the clip-art loop. I have reinstalled
with all users as Admin and as soon as I limit the accounts they have the
problems. I have even tried installing Office outside the Program Files
directory and it made no difference.

At present I cannot report this to Microsoft over their support e-mail
system as I always get 'An unknown application error has ocurred - please try
again in a few minutes' I've been trying for the last 2 weeks! Anyone who
solves this issue will save me from constant ear-ache from my children and
will be my hero!

Prepare to possibly get even more grumpy....

Subsequent to posting this note, I contacted Microsoft tech support. I
contacted Office support, but they decided it was really a Windows problem,
so put me over to Windows support. Windows tried a few things, and then
decided that it would require a reinstall of Office, which required a
transfer back to Office support. Office support tried various things,
including first doing an uninstall of Office, then a conversion of all
accounts to administrator status, then a reinstall of Office. But, alas,
when the accounts were converted back to limited accounts, the same thing
happened. They then decided that it must be my spyware software (Counterspy)
so we uninstalled that, and tried the whole procedure again... with the same
results. They then suggested that it was Norton Internet Security, which we
uninstalled (including Norton antivirus), and then reinstalled Office...with
the same results. They then made some phone calls to other help people and
said that I needed to download and run a piece of software from Symantec's
website that is supposed to remove all vestiges of Norton Internet
Security/Antivirus from your machine, because that might be the problem. At
this stage, having spent 3 1/2 hours on the phone with them (and I must say,
they were very patient and clearly trying their best), I said that I couldn't
continue at that point. They offered to call me back 2 days later to see how
things were going...

After doing what they suggested, I found myself back at the beginning -
completely removing Norton did nothing to solve the problem. I'm now at a
point where I can't waste any more time on this. I plan to reinstall Norton
and CounterSpy, and then reinstall Office 2000.

Incidentally, Microsoft did call back 2 nights later, but not in the 2 hour
window that they had given me, and so I was out. They said they would call
back the next day, but I haven't heard from them since.

I hope you have better luck than I did.

Thanks for the update, you sound to have had a pretty torrid time of it. In
case it's of any interest both my systems use Zone Alarm Security Suite
although one of them originally came with Norton but I removed it a long
while ago. I will keep plugging away but it sounds like it could be one of
those 'features' that software has that no-one really wants! I am even
trying Dell to find out if there is any reason why my two computers (1 x 8400
and 1x 5100) should show different behaviour when OS, BIOS, Office, IE etc
versions are the same. They will probably blame Office but it is worth a
try....nothing ventured etc.
