Office 2003 Upgrade error 1406

When upgrading from Office 2k to 2003 (on XP SP2), I received the MS Office
Setup mssg "Error 1406. Setup cannot write the value doc to the registry
key.... Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access registry or
contact MS PSS etc .... Since I was locked into the middle of the install, I
selected ignore to complete the install and everything seems to be working ok
(having tested Word, Excel and Access at least so far). And since this is a
single user XP home edition setup I have full admin access (I think).

So as I said things seem to be working ok except when I ran Norton
Systemworks 2004 last night as I usually do before shutting down the PC, I
received 32 errors in the "Windows Registry Scan" and only 1 could be fixed
.... the details of the mssg are
- Invalid file extensions (4 problems)
- Invalid ActiveXCOM entries(27 problems)

Is there an MS utility or 3rd party program that I can use to get this issue
resolved? As I said my pc is working ok and the Office apps I have tested so
far seem to be running ok. Thoughts?

Hello again ... I am still having the same problem with the registry
errors as mentioned above and yesterday I purchased Registry Mechanic
(RM) which found over 400 errors and was able to initially correct
them, or so I thought. After rebooting the WinXP (home) Sp2
single-user machine, I reran RM and it found the same 32 registry
errors so I am concerned that even though Office03 seems to be working
ok, this will lead to future problems.

I also did a search on this board for error 1406 and found "Lynn"'s
note with some links to MS articles on this error, but the closest one
was only applicable to WinXP Prossional. Any and all thoughts or ideas
will be appreciated .... TerryG

Hi,
I was experiencing the same problem when installing Office 2007 Beta. I got
10 warnings at least but I ignored all. The program seems to be working now
but I'm still nervous if it causes some malfunction.

If anybody has a clue it would be appreciated.

It may cause problems. The notice on the beta site stes:
"It is important to understand that beta software does not necessarily
display the same high level of stability of shipped Microsoft products."
"Beta testers may experience problems with the Microsoft Office 2007 Beta 2
products that could potentially result in loss, corruption, or destruction
of existing data."
"This beta testing release is not appropriate for production use." (This
particular point was in bold text.)
"It is strongly recommended that you back up your existing data before you
install and run this software."
"Beta code is offered "as is", and does NOT include technical support."

They were not kidding. I fear too many people are not taking those caveats
seriously and downloading the beta "just because".
