Student Select and Office for Mac 2008

JE McGimpsey

After installing Office for Mac 2008, I now have to unselect the option to
use Fn keys as standard function keys e.g. F3 key mute function only works if
the preference is unselected.

Where are you unselecting "the option"? If you're talking about the
System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse, it sounds like it's working exactly
as it should. F3 alone should only work as a mute key with the checkbox
unchecked. If the checkbox is checked so that F1, F2, etc work as
Function Keys, you have to, as the dialog says, "press the Fn key to use
the special features" (e.g., mute).
Also the original fn key function is now replaced by the shift key.

So Shift now works as the Fn key? That's weird.

MUST you post in HTML?
As for Entourage sound effects, there is now only default sound sets.
The microsoft sound set is no longer available. More importantly,
sound effects for no mail sound etc are no longer working.

I never use sound effects, but I turned them on, started Entourage, got
the Welcome Sound, then the No Mail sound for the first account checked.
After that, no sound. So I guess it's a bug. Please use Help/Send
Feedback to let MacBU know you want it fixed.

Regarding Entourage:

1) What files (and where) should I backup to protect my contacts, calendar and email (I use a backup program that does it every night)?

2) How do I turn off My Day permanently so it won't automatically pop up?

3) How do I set it so that the Sync between Entourage and the Apple mail and ical happens automatically?

4) Does syncing always take so long? I have about 2,500 contacts and when I only change one in iCal to sync in Entourage it took 30+ minutes slugging through each contact.

hi i have just installed 2008 upgrade office
during installation it asked if i would like to remove previous 2004 office suite, i was not sure as i have lost my 2004 disks, so if there was a problem i could not load back to 2004
is it ok to remove 2004?
is 2008 a complete installation and it only checks to confirm you have an authorized version of 2004, once this has been done it does a complete office install?
if this is so, should i do another 2008 install and when prompted say yes to 2004 removal?
Thanks

You can leave it installed, but I would recommend using it in a new User and
use Fast User Switching to go back and forth. Be sure you install 2004
BEFORE you install 2008.

Yes

When you run the installer it will remove old fonts regardless if you decide
to keep your old copy of Office 2004. Read this blog article on installing
Office 2008.

It's OK, but not necessary. I'd leave it installed, if you have the disk
space. You may want to use, a 2004 version if a file contains macros
that you want to run.

1) Yes.

2) No. The discount price was available only for purchases made during the
published discount period.

3) One, unless you buy the Home and Student version. That one licence
allows two installations: one desktop, one laptop. However, you cannot run
any of the programs on one computer while you have any of them running on
the other.

The Home and Student version gives you three licences, which can be used
concurrently.

I own Office 2004 Student edition, which I purchased over 2 years ago. My
questions are:

1. Am I eligible to purchase the upgrade verson of the full Office 2008, or
do I have to buy the full version?
2. What price will I pay - do I get the discount, or is that just for those
who purchased during the special office period.
3. How many licenses come with Office 2008 version. I have a desktop and a
laptop and would need to install on both.

Thanks

Back up your

Turn off all the checkboxes in the MyDay preferences.

Just today (17 January 2008), I installed Office 2008 on my Mac and discovered a major incompatibility: Excel files, moderate in size or larger (e.g., 2 Mb) created in Excel 2007 for PC and saved in xlsx and xlsb formats cannot be opened by Excel 2008 for Mac.

I just spent an hour on the phone with technical support at Microsoft. While talking to the support person there, I sent to him three such files, and he and his collegues were unable to open any of them in Excel 2008.

If you try to open such a file in Excel 2008, the latter seems to "hang", but will eventually report (after 10 to 15 minutes) that the file is "incompatible" or "corrupt". I sent three such files to Microsoft, and, while they were able to open all of them in Excel 2007 for PC, they could not open any of them in Excel 2008. They are deferring the matter to the Mac development team at Microsoft for further investigation, but for now, have no fix.

I also tried to use Excel 2008 to open such a file that was residing on the Windows partition of my Mac's hard drive, but once again, Excel 2008 was unable to open it.

I am pretty comfortable using Automator, but don't need Exchange support. Is the Automator support in the full version just a set of preset actions, meaning I can get the H&S edition and still create my own actions? Or do I need the full edition to use Automator at all?

Hi Adam!

Automator actions are not included with the Home & Student edition of
Office 2008. At minimum you'll need the mid-level product "Office 2008
for Mac".

Actions specific to Entourage include:

Add Attachments to Entourage Messages.action
Close Entourage Items.action
Create New Entourage Mail Message.action
Delete Entourage Items.action
Export Entourage Contacts.action
Forward Entourage Mail Messages.action
Get Selected Entourage Items.action
Get Selected Text from Entourage Items.action
Get Text From Entourage Mail Messages.action
Import Contacts into Entourage.action
Insert Content into Entourage Mail Messages.action
Mark Entourage Mail Message as a To Do Item.action
Open Entourage Items.action
Paste Clipboard Content into Entourage Items.action
Print Entourage Messages.action
Quit Entourage.action
Reply to Entourage Mail Messages.action
Save Entourage Items as Files.action
Save Entourage Items.action
Save Files Attached to Entourage Mail Messages.action
Search Entourage Items.action
Send Outgoing Entourage Mail Messages.action
Set Category of Entourage Items.action
Set Entourage Contact Properties.action
Set Project for Entourage Items.action

The Actions set for Office 2008 totals over 100.

Hope this helps!

Office 2008 doesn't include a web browser, so I don't see how your web
problem has much to do with Office.

But the Office 2008 installer updates and adds a whole slew of fonts, so
noticing a problem in web browsers just after installation may not be
all that unusual.

First, restart your computer to rebuild your font caches. If that
doesn't work then run a utility to clean your font caches such as Cocktail.

Hope this helps!

Hi Adam:

The ability to "use" Automator actions is there, you just have to make your
own.

So no, you don't need the full version....

Cheers

Yes. Entourage is the only one that is different.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I am mostly interested in Word, Excel and Powerpoint so my main question is answered but now I'm curious to know what differences there are between Entourage in H/S and the in other editions.

Exchange support. It is absent in the H&S edition, but it is part of both
the Standard and Special Media editions.

Does anyone know if there is if Entourage now syncs effectively with iCal (and also Address Book? I have had zero success with Office 2004 doing this properly. I constantly get appointments deleted, duplicated, etc.

I 'm having a preformance problem with office 2008. I have a spreadheet with a few graphs, and many cells which reference other cells. When I enter my daily numbers, there is a 5-7 second lag, complete with CPU pegging and spinning beach balls.

I have a Mini with 2 gig of memory 1.66 gzh core duo processor.

There is a shorter lag on my Mac quad pro, but a lag none the less.
There was no problem with Excel in Office 2004.

This performance degrade is unacceptable. Please advise.
