Student Select and Office for Mac 2008

The ability to "use" Automator actions is there, you just have to make your
own.

So no, you don't need the full version....

The actions are not as easy to recreate as it would seem. You can do things
with Entourage for example that use the supplied Automator actions.

See this tutorial for an example. It uses Automator but does not use any of
the Office 2008 actions for Office.

Entourage and Time Machine

<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2008/01/entourage_and_time_machine.html>

I imagine that the actions will be widely available on the torrents as they
are small and don't require a registration number.

IMHO, it was a feature that shouldn't have been left out of Home & Student
version.

How do I identify the product ID on Office Mac 2008

In any Office app, choose File/About <app name>...

However, if you're looking for it in order to register, don't bother -
the *only* thing registration does is put you on a list to get an email
newsletter.

I'm still using Office X with Tiger.

Will Office 2008 Home & Student Edition smoothly & easily import all necessary information from Office X during installation?

Office 2008 (any edition) will not smoothly & easily import much, if
any, information from Office X other than the Entourage database.

Preference items are not carried over.

Word may, if it finds a previous Normal template, try to base a new
Normal on that file, but I strongly recommend you rename the old Normal,
start up, then use the Organizer to transfer any custom toolbars,
autotext, etc. to the new Normal.dotm file.

If you have a default template for XL, you can open it in XL08, make
whatever changes you want, then save it as a template to the startup
folder

Does anyone know if there is if Entourage now syncs effectively with iCal
(and also Address Book? I have had zero success with Office 2004 doing this
properly. I constantly get appointments deleted, duplicated, etc.

It's been working fine for me with Entourage 2008 and iCal/Address Book.

Of course, Sync doesn't carry Entourage categories across, since it
doesn't know anything about them, but I haven't seen any duplicate or
deleted appointments.

Hi,

What are the terms of the licence for Home use? Someone mentioned the EULA above - where can I read this? For example, if I have a Mac at home, but occasionally use it for writing documents for my own small business am I entitled to use the H/S edition? I suspect not, but would like to see the details of the license!

Thanks,
G.Patterson

It is inexcusable that Microsoft has decided to remove the exchange support in the Home and Student version of Office 2008.

How do we fix this?

Go to Help: Provide Feedback. This feedback goes directly to the developers. We need to create a lot of feedback and provide some logic for Microsoft to create an update and add the exchange support. Students shouldn't have to be 150 more dollars for one minor thing. And the whole concept of a student version is to provide the same software at a cheaper price.

SEND FEEDBACK-Hopefully we will be listened to.

I agree with Brian! I am a full-time student and work part-time in a office that uses MS exchange. The 2004 student/teacher version supported exchange just fine, so I doubt I'll upgrade, unless this changes. My company certainly isn't going to buy me the Office suite just so I can check my email at home if I so choose!

In Word im constantly getting the following error when pressing almost any key (eg. trying to make a tab, pressing enter for a new line or even a character key when writing!): 'This command is not available in this version of Microsoft Word.'. Word is not usable like this...

Can the home and student version mail merge in Word or is that done with automator actions?

I need a bit more information. Which version of Word? Which version of the
operating system?

Let's try the easy one first: Find and delete the "Normal Template" as
described here: http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

That may cure it. If it doesn't, I think you have a failed installation,
and you need to delete the ~:Library:preferences:Microsoft:Office 2008
folder, then re-run your installation.

Hope this helps

I recently purchased Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac and the main reason was to open works files (.wks). To my dissapointment they didn't open even after I installed office.
1) Is there a way to open wks files using office?
2) Is there works software for mac available?

Daiya Mitchell

There is no Works for Mac (anymore).

I've not found anything that will open Works on the mac, but I haven't
checked recently (tested Pages, NeoOffice, and AbiWord, I think) You
can also purchase a conversion program--see the list of supported formats
http://www.dataviz.com/products/maclinkplus/index.html
http://www.dataviz.com/products/maclinkplus/mlp_xlators.html

Couple pieces of general advice:

--it's better to start a new thread than post on an existing one,
ESPECIALLY when you have a new problem
--don't spend money largely for one feature without checking to make
sure it exists first.

Microsoft Works files are notoriously incompatible with most software.

I am about to purchase Office 08 for Mac but I am confused about the Entourage differences in the Home/Student vs. Standard editions. Could someone tell me if the functionality is the same(ei: storing emails in folders, attaching documents, contacts info, etc.).

Thanks.

Depending on what school you attend, you can get really great deals on MS software at JourneyEd. Office Professional for $84.

All of the functions you mentioned are the same.

The Home & Student version does not contain Exchange support or Automator
Actions. Some university students need exchange to connect for their school
mail. Please contact your school to see what's needed or what package they
can offer you.
