I'm exploring IMAP For the first time.
Big problem: email come into the inbox, but no indicator of new mail.

a friend said that Gmail can unify all you email accounts. You tell your email client to forward all of it to Gmail. What the story on that? how do it? thanks!!

I'm exploring IMAP For the first time. Big problem: email come into
the inbox, but no indicator of new mail.

Under Tools --> Accounts... double-click your IMAP account and then
explore its Options tab.

Live Sync is the feature that enables your IMAP account to stay
connected while you have Entourage open. This means that within seconds
of your server receiving a message then you will be notified. This is
independent of whatever Send/Receive schedule you have enabled.

You can use Live Sync if your IMAP supprts IDLE. Right-click or
Control-click your IMAP account in the folder list on the left and
select Get Info. If you see the word IDLE somewhere in the long list of
supported features then you can use Live Sync.

Your account should reflect the number of unread messages correctly when
Live Sync is available.

Also under Options, look at the last option to check for unread messages
in subscribed folders (anything other than the default folders).

If you feel that the number is not getting reflected properly then you
can right-click or Control-click your account in the folder list and
select "Repair Message List". This is a trouble-shooting measure. It
will clear your local cache of mail and synchronize it again from the
server. Remember, IMAP syncs mail with the server unlike POP, which is
meant to download and deleted from the server.
also: a friend said that Gmail can unify all you email accounts. You
tell your email client to forward all of it to Gmail. What the story
on that? how do it? thanks!!

The better way to do this is to not forward from your client (don't
forward from Entourage) but instead log in to your account's webmail
address and forward mail to your Gmail account from there. Most service
providers offer webmail access.

Hope this helps!

You can configure that within Gmail, not your email client. And you can
"send as" any of your other email accounts. Look into "Canned
Responses" in the Labs and you can set all your signature files to be
easily inserted also from any email account.

I have moved all of my 9 email accounts over to gmail/imap within the
last month and also imported all of my contacts and configured my
calendar. I can now retrieve all email and send as on any computer with
internet. I also picked up a Palm Pre and had all my email, calendar
and contacts configured on it immediately, since it interfaces with
gmail perfectly, and also works with Exchange. I'm done with email
clients. There isn't any need for them any longer.

No need. It can be set up within gmail.

Thanks guys for the useful feedback.

William:

I got the live sync checked. Now works. thanks.
Interestingly: you don't even have to click send receive anymore ever again, correct? They just magically appear in your inbox. Any downside to that?

I right click: get info is grayed out and all the other stuff you said to look for does not appear. why not?

TERRY/ William:
I don't see anything in account section about forwarding to Gmail either.

but Terry says not to bother anyway.
Question, if I join Gmail and set up there, will clients see everything as it's coming from those seperate accounts. Of course Terry, unlike Entourage/imap, it's just pure webmail. I lose the interface I've known and loved all these years, right?

Finally,
last hitch for imap. My verizon accounts don't work and Verizon says they don't support imap, which is strange, since they are my isp and imap works for some other email accounts. What to do? Any workaround?
Also, any downsides to imap over pop which I've been on forever. and william, what think of imap vs pop. vs gmail?

PSS: one of my important web hosters wrote this, what think of it?:

With IMAP, you have to be more intentional about cleaning your account on the server out. If you leave too much mail on the server, your account will cease to respond, and that amount is going to vary, depending on the message content and on your email client. We do not officially support IMAP, so any issues that come up with the account would be up to you to resolve.

Gmail has a "Send Mail As" feature so your incoming mail can be replied
to from the same address, not only gmail.

I used Netscape and now Thunderbird for a LONG time (now only using it
for newsgroups). It was limited to using on only computers I had taken
the time to configure it on (wasn't interested in the Portable Apps
version). Now that I have all my mail from all my mail accounts going
into Gmail, I can access all of them on any computer that has an
internet connection. And I have all of it working perfectly on my Palm
Pre. Today I was even able to configure my Pre to be able to "Send As"
so my incoming mail on my phone can be sent out using the same email
address. And my Calendars and Contacts are immediately available to me,
since the Pre interfaces with Gmail very well. Not counting it also
support Exchange.

The interface isn't perfect, but using Labels (like folders), "Canned
Responses" for my sig files, I don't need a mail client any longer. It
has simplified my mail access beyond my expectations.
Finally, last hitch for imap. My verizon accounts don't work and
Verizon says they don't support imap, which is strange, since they

Not all email providers support IMAP. Once I read that Gmail supported
it, I started moving to it.

Nice thing about IMAP, ALL of your folders reside on the server. So
wherever you access it, they're all available. POP only uses the Inbox,
so any other folders won't be available that you create on another client.

I have always kept my email folders clean, and I also keep my Gmail
folders clean, regardless of the huge disk space available.

so you think Gmail is better than Entourage with imap?
But Gmail is not imap right? it's web - based email.
But you are on Entourage forum? odd no?

Gmail is IMAP with a web-based interface for access. You can also access it
as an IMAP server in Entourage -- that's how I use it.

Entourage is a client, nothing else. It accesses mail accounts, POP or
IMAP.
But Gmail is not imap right? it's web - based email.

Gmail has IMAP and POP.
But you are on Entourage forum? odd no?

I was here asking about a client user issue on Entourage. You asked
about Gmail and I gave you my thoughts on it.
Question, anyway I can get my Verizon accounts to work with imap? thanks!

I don't know if Verizon supports IMAP. My ISP is Earthlink and they're
POP.

If you have something like Gmail/IMAP, it doesn't matter if Verizon
supports it or not. You get the Gmail account, enable IMAP (not enabled
by default), and then you can access it using Entourage, Outlook, or a
web browser.

Ed: How do you do that? use Entourage/ imap via Gmail. I don't see that offerred. what am I missing? where is this?

Terry:
But Gmail is on a webpage, right? So I have to go log into a webpage. With Entourage I just open my software, entourage -- that's a big difference no?

same question for you Terry.
"you can access it using Entourage"
Where is this in entourage, don't see word Google anywhere.

Under Entourage>Account Settings, select the Mail tab, pull down the New
drop-down menu and select Mail...
Change account type to IMAP and click OK.
Choose an account name such as gmail.
Set up your name and email address for gmail, e.g., (e-mail address removed).
Enter your email address again as the Account ID
Enter imap.gmail.com as the IMAP server.
Enter your gmail password and save it in the keychain.
Under advanced receiving options, select ... requires SSL.
Enter smtp.gmail.com as the SMTP server.
Under advanced sending options select the following:
SMTP requires SSL
Override default SMTP port: 465
SMTP server requires authorization
Use same settings ...

Not really any downside. It's just a feature that's not supported on all
IMAP servers.
I right click: get info is grayed out and all the other stuff you
said to look for does not appear. why not?

Be sure you're only doing this with an IMAP account and that you are
connected to the Internet. This information comes directly from your server.
TERRY/ William: I don't see anything in account section about
forwarding to Gmail either.

Do you mean the in the account section while viewing your account in
webmail? Not being able to set up forwarding in webmail would be very
unusual.
Finally, last hitch for imap. My verizon accounts don't work and
Verizon says they don't support imap, which is strange, since they

Don't confuse Gmail with a mail protocol. Gmail supports both POP and
IMAP. By default, they configure your account as IMAP now.

Each protocol has its merits. POP was designed for single computers
connecting to mailboxes with small storage quotas. IMAP was designed for
access from multiple computers to mailboxes with larger storage quotas.
PSS: one of my important web hosters wrote this, what think of it?:

An IMAP account with a small storage quota is very unusual in today's
world. That doesn't mean storage is infinite with IMAP accounts but
you're more likely to have at least 1GB of storage with an IMAP account
and maybe 100MB of storage with a POP account. I'd look elsewhere if a
service provider doesn't offer at least 1GB of storage for an IMAP account.

Google's Gmail service does offer mail hosting so that you can retain
your own domain names. You can find more answers in their FAQ
<http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/faq.html>.

Cost for Google's Google Apps service is $50 per user per year. This
includes more than just mail service.

Hope this helps!

Is this correct?

If you want to use the *free* Gmail service then, yes, you will have to
use @gmail.com.

Google does offer a *paid* service where you can use your own domain
names instead. That paid service is called "Google Apps".

Google Apps, thanks. this works any better than if I got my imap situation down in Entourage?
I guess the big advantage is no worry on server space? ie you saw the email from the one hoster.
I wonder it my verizon emails would then work with imap using google apps?

A couple of points:

1. You seem to have the impression that using Entourage is different
from using Gmail. It's not. Accessing Gmail through a web browser is
great when you don't have your own computer or if you're traveling. But
you can still connect Entourage to your Gmail account and view it
through Entourage as well. Entourage offers you more features
(searching, organizing, most of all -- speed) for dealing with mail than
looking at it through a web browser.

2. You're correct. Google's big draw is the huge amount of storage space
they offer. With today's very inexpensive storage costs, a service
provider that offers very limited storage is doing you a disservice.

Whether you're using Google, Verizon or any other service provider,
E-mail is E-mail is E-mail. Most any E-mail message can be transferred
somehow to any other service, such as from Verizon to Gmail.

Bill,
is the key point in storage that you can archive all you email forver and search for it later? Those thousands of emails you deleted, you can now find that person from eight months ago? Current I clean out my delete folder in pop every month.

Also, Do you think if I got on board with Google apps I would be able to use my Verizon emails which currently don't work with Entourage imap?

Yes, that is the point.

I personally prefer to clean out old messages too but some folks like to
hang on to everything.
Also, Do you think if I got on board with Google apps I would be able
to use my Verizon emails which currently don't work with Entourage

What do you mean by "use my Verizon emails"?
