IMAP Inbox indicator and Gmail question

Like I have been saying, I send as AND receive from 9 other accounts
that are NOT gmail accounts. I don't know what else to tell you Bill.

Well so do-I.
I can SEND through the Googme SMTP for any of my accounts, but I only
RECEIVE e-mails for my gmail.com account on the Google IMAP server.

There are only two (free) ways to "unify" your accounts through gMail
(to receive everything on your gmail account):
- Get gmail to pull all your e-mails from the other accounts through
POP3 (it's in the Settings section).
- Get the e-mails on the other accounts to automatically be redirected
to your gmail account (I use that for my MVPs.org account).

Bill is absolutely right and as he mentioned, gmail will not host
accounts with another domain name straight on their server, unless you
pay for it.

Terry,
forget about Bill for a moment, and I am going to re-ask my question.
If I ever get on board with this, I'll render the verdict who is right.

Ok, Terry, I see the mistake,
I was starting with import mail and contacts instead of "check mail using pop3" -- Add pop 3 email account.
Ok I added one of my emails.
There was one step that asked to either have Gmail host or have smtp host (recommened for professional accounts), I did not understand that but chose Gmail. Seems logical no?
Now what? How do I test this? Can I send/ receive via Entourage "using" Gmail servers? I am still lost. Finally, / We are still talking POP, but the whole reason I got Gmail is to use their servers and huge space to handle my new IMAP accounts no? thanks!

Kevin,

I keep forgetting to bring this up. You need to ALWAYS leave the quoted
material you are replying to, rather than respond using only your reply
and removing everything else.

If you look at my messages to you (and others), you will see the quoted
material above my reply. That way no one has to view a different
message to find out WHO or WHAT you are responding to.

Take care,

I SEND through the SMTP of my non-gmail accounts and I use the free
service. I RECEIVE email from my non-gmail accounts also using only the
free service.

Anything you or Bill are saying doesn't seem to matter, as my non-gmail
accounts are being sent from Gmail and they show the "From" as my
non-gmail accounts, and replies are sent directly to the non-gmail
accounts also. And I manage them all within Gmail.

Terry, thanks, ok, gotta get in that habit.
I don't know what you mean by add a gmail account to Entourage. Honestly the Gmail interface is so convoluted I have idea really where to add anything in there.
Let's make this easy. I have one emal account in Entourage. It's called (e-mail address removed) . It's IMAP. Now I want to send and receive in Entourage as usual, but use Gmail for it's sever. I have no idea where to start. thanks

You are using Gmail to aggregate content from *other* servers. That's
not the same as Gmail's servers receiving those messages directly.

You cannot close the accounts on the other servers or else you would
cease receiving their messages in Gmail.

You made an issue out of nothing. If you go back to the beginning,
Kevin asked if he could ONLY send email with a gmail account or if he
could send using his other accounts. You told him the free accounts
ONLY would send thru gmail.

Back on 9-19:
Kevin:
I have numerous currnt email addresses. let say:
(e-mail address removed), (e-mail address removed), (e-mail address removed) etc etc.

I supposed to enter emails addresses that end with Gmail.com Entourge?
Is this correct?

You:
If you want to use the *free* Gmail service then, yes, you will have to
use @gmail.com.

Google does offer a *paid* service where you can use your own domain
names instead. That paid service is called "Google Apps".

I told him he could send using his other domain names, which IS possible
using the free service. THAT'S ALL.

You keep confusing what everything does. If you have "one" account in
Entourage, you configured it. Entourage is NOT a mail server, but only
a mail client to access your mail accounts.

Go back and read Ed Kimball's response on 9-17. He explains how to add
the gmail account in Entourage. I used Thunderbird for a long time as a
mail client, and I configured it this way for IMAP/gmail:
Incoming
Server name: imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
user name: (e-mail address removed)
Security: SSL

For outgoing server settings (SMTP):
server name: smtp.gmail.com
port: 587
user name: (e-mail address removed)
secure connection: TLS

I also configured my Sent mail to be saved in the "Sent Mail on Gmail
IMAP", and Drafts to be saved in "Drafts on Gmail IMAP", and Templates
to Gmail IMAP.

I don't know what you mean by add a gmail account to Entourage.

In Entourage select Accounts under Tools. Select to create a new IMAP
account.

Enter the info for your Gmail account.

Detailed instructions can be found here:

Connect Entourage 2004 to Gmail¹s IMAP service

Thanks Diane,
I'll read that over.
It's this worth it in your opinon? To get G mail in the act. Or more work than one needs?

It's a setting on gMail.
You need to validate your other accounts to be able to send through them
as the other address.

That's relaying sent e-mails through the gMail SMTP.

I thought that was your objective to start with. I'm confused and it seems
you need to give this all a good ponder and decide how to manage all those
emails you have.

K

Well, I've narrowed down IMAP to just 6 emails. Totally confused about Gmail and how what could work with Entourage, but I have to read you link tomorrow

Regardless, telling someone it can't be done with the free service was
incorrect. And from there, the argument from Bill was about nothing I
told the OP he could do with the free service.

Again, a NON-ISSUE. ALL the OP wanted to know was COULD HE SEND an
email using his other email addresses. ALL the rest is irrelevant
! That was NEVER what the OP asked.

Hardly ANY clients display the "received" header that users view, and
even if they do, it's an optional setting.

Who are you replying to???

I've explained how to do it. Ed explained and I referred you back to
him. PLEASE do the homework first, then report back, okay?

Terry,
thanks for pointing out that email accounts are not controlled by Entourage. I use it so much it feels like that. They are on a server by webhoster.
That said, even I ever figured out Gmail, those emails are still on server by my webhoster -- no? not on G mail server ie my account:

Diane, I read the pdf, great, but it's all about using @gmail, and I want to
use (e-mail address removed)

Are you forwarding this to Gmail? It sounds like you just don't understand
the steps in forwarding an account to Gmail then downloading into Entourage
and replying. I'm not the person to ask about this since I don't actually
use it for this purpose.

I know you've received a lot of info and it could be you are reading it with
your assumptions and not getting the real info. This is a common mistake
when trying to learn something. The person giving the directions is telling
you one thing, but when you read it, it's colored by your understanding of
the terms.

Since we've not been able to help you after extensive posts, it might be
time to have an expert come in to help you personally. Ask your local MUG if
they can recommend someone.
