IMAP Inbox indicator and Gmail question

Bill,
thanks, normally I delete every month, but it would be nice to search for that person you want to reach from 8 months ago. That could only be achieved with Google space. For now though I need to get the basics down in Entourage, did you see my last two post:

this last email account is really hanging me up:
<http://www.officeformac.com/ms/ProductForums/Entourage/11540>

My Verizon email accounts mean, the 5-6 email account I have with verizon (e-mail address removed)
They don't work with imap, and verizon says they don't support imap. I wonder if they might work if I get on board with Google/

Don't confuse Gmail with a mail protocol. Gmail supports both POP and
IMAP. By default, they configure your account as IMAP now.

Actually IMAP has to be enabled in Gmail, so the default is POP.

If you want to use the *free* Gmail service then, yes, you will have to
use @gmail.com.

Not so. In Gmail/Settings/Accounts and Import/ set up other email
accounts using "Send Mail As". I have 9 non-gmail email accounts within
Gmail and I can send or reply using any of them.

A couple of points:

1. You seem to have the impression that using Entourage is different
from using Gmail. It's not. Accessing Gmail through a web browser is
great when you don't have your own computer or if you're traveling. But
you can still connect Entourage to your Gmail account and view it
through Entourage as well. Entourage offers you more features
(searching, organizing, most of all -- speed) for dealing with mail than
looking at it through a web browser.

You think "Google" mail doesn't offer searching?

You can organize using "Labels", similar to folders, only copies are not
put in each "Label".

Speed? I have my Gmail accounts working on my Palm Pre phone. So I can
access my email/contacts/calendar from any computer with an internet
connection or my cell phone. No "syncing" required. Doesn't get faster
than that.

2. You're correct. Google's big draw is the huge amount of storage space
they offer. With today's very inexpensive storage costs, a service
provider that offers very limited storage is doing you a disservice.

Whether you're using Google, Verizon or any other service provider,
E-mail is E-mail is E-mail. Most any E-mail message can be transferred
somehow to any other service, such as from Verizon to Gmail.

Your Verizon accounts don't need to "work with imap". You set up your
Gmail account, then in Gmail/Settings/Accounts and Import/ set up your
Verizon email accounts using "Send Mail As".

TERRY,
fascinating. I'm first going to get IMAP working comfortable in Entourage on my desktop & laptop. The minute that is achieved. I going right to my Gmail account and going to test you achievements there! looks interesting!

Bad example, but searching will be faster with a client because the
client will have local caches of files. Searching is also possible
offline with a client.
You can organize using "Labels", similar to folders, only copies are not

Labeling is one facet of organizing. I can also sort in Entourage using
Groups. I can also drag and drop messages into folders or sub-folders.
If needed, I can drag a message out of Entourage onto my Desktop.

HTTP calls are limited. I can browse a few thousand messages at once in
Entourage but not with Google. To do the same with a browser would take
considerably more time.

I get the impression that you seem to think I'm poo-pooing Gmail. I'm
certainly not. I'm trying to provide examples of why someone might want
to use Entourage to connect to Gmail rather than using the web
interface. Both have their merits.

Not a bad example at all. Google searches everything in the IMAP account
almost instantly. And who needs it "offline" any longer?

Your answers were incorrect, not "poo-pooing" it. I was just correcting
them.

You FIRST need to get the Gmail account working and ENABLE IMAP. Then
you can set up Entourage to retrieve the mail from Gmail.

I was just bringing up the other things because you don't even need
Entourage (or Outlook) to pick up IMAP/Gmail. Any computer with
internet or a smart cell phone can do it just fine.

But I do archive lots of emails and drag them to the desktop.

You should look at EagleFiler to archive messages. This is from the author
os SpamSieve.

<http://c-command.com/eaglefiler/>

See this review by Corentin:

<http://tinyurl.com/bykryx>

One free option is to use eMessage Archiver. It uses a free runtime version
of FileMaker.

<http://homepage.mac.com/thinkagain/eMA/>

Another option that backs up to FileMaker is Mail to FileMaker Importer.

All of these will give you searching capabilities as well as securing your
message.

----------
The issue that concerns me is I started the process and the fields asked for emails ending with @gmail.com
You have said you don't need @gmail.com, but I don't see them saying that.
Also, Bill has a point. You are correct you don't need Entourage or a computer. But I do archive lots of emails and drag them to the desktop.
I guess I could archive on web as well, but would be nice to have both happening simutaneously.

You're not explaining clearly. "Started the process" doesn't tell me
exactly what you've completed. What "fields" are you talking about?
You will have to clearly state what you have completed in Gmail and
where the exact tab in Settings you're working on.

You have to go into the Gmail Settings where I explained before what you
needed to do. There you can set up your existing email accounts within
Gmail.

People archive differently. Since Gmail offers quite a bit of space,
you could create Labels using any names you choose, and then just set
the label of the email to an archive label when you're ready to move it
out of your Inbox (or whatever other label it currently had). But that
may not work for you, although there are other methods available.

I just create folders and drag email into them. Isn't that all one needs to
do?

Yes, but how do you ever find anything in them or manage them? If all you do
is save them, why bother?

Without a paid Google Apps account, you cannot receive mail addressed to
a domain other than google.com or gmail.com.

I'm calling my own example a bad example.

Lots of folks need offline access, especially when they are traveling
heavily and receive loads of E-mail. They stop at a hotspot or their
office, download and process later on a plane, train or other location
where Internet access may not be available.
Regardless, you said said Gmail didn't offer "organizing", but it most
certainly does.

In a reply that I could have been worded better, I said Entourage offers
more features and in parentheses I including "organizing". I know Google
offers "organization". My intent was that this is an area where
Entourage offers more features.
You're reaching here.

Not at all. If I need to browse through hundreds or thousands of
messages, I can do so in Entourage by sorting by a few options first and
then scrolling. Google has a limit of 100 messages per window, I
believe. Sometimes I have a need to go through old threads without
knowing the subjects of those threads or maybe the senders.

Wrong again Bill. I said I had 9 email accounts "coming" into Gmail.
And they're ALL from other domains. And I don't pay for anything.

Look into further. Then report back.
