Missing Features in Excel 2008!?

Is it possible to get the floating dock to NOT float, and have it be
stationary?

if yes, please give directions.

if no, please just say no.

Not sure what you're referring to...

"dock" in XL usually refers to toolbars being held static against the
edge of the screen. With XL08, *some* toolbars can be "docked" in a
workbook window.

Floating is the opposite, so "floating dock" is something of an
oxymoron...

JE McGimpsey

I want the formatting palette to be stationary.

Then don't move it?

As long as you have the Toolbox (of which the Formatting Palette is one
part) set far enough to the left to accommodate the widest instance (the
Object Palette, for me) *and* not docked to the right side of the
window, it shouldn't move from side to side.

Of course, it varies in height (and a bit in width) depending on what
the selection contains and which panes are open.

If you could be a bit more specific, use Help/Send Feedback to let MS
know how that would help you use the product.

I have an Excel 2008 spreadsheet with a row of values, one for each minute between 9:30 AM and 3:59 PM. 390 cells. I would like to create a matching row containing the time for each cell, i.e. leftmost cell of the new matching row would contain 9:30 and the next cell to the right would contain 9:32.

I enter =a219+1 in the second cell and drag it across the row. I do NOT get 9:31 in the second cell nor any of the others to the right.

That is because Excel keeps time as a fraction of a day. So by adding one,
you are adding a whole day. Since you formatted the cells as time it will
show the same time. To add one minute to a cell add 1/24/60, so your formula
will look like =a1+1/24/60.

Excel 2008 under Tiger 10.4.11.
Spreadsheet with a row of 390 cells.
Max(a277:nz277) returns a value 1.004240562

I would like to find the specific cell containing that value, but:
- the value displayed in the Max-value cell is 1.004240562 due to different precision.
- I would like to automatically locate the Max-value cell. I have tried LOCATE() but that returns N/A, perhaps due to the differing precision?

How can I do this, please?

I have a row of 390 cells of data:
1 1.000080346 1.000045404 0.99994221 1.000008155 ...

I highlight the row and select Data/Sort/Options/Sort left to right/Row 1782/OK

Nothing in that row changes!

Sorting is critical in my Excel applications.

How do you make a graph in excel 2008?

You actually can't, this is a feature that is missing from excel 2008. No more graphs!!

The problem is that It keeps minimizing and I would just like it to be part of the window of the document I'm working on.

I've investigated this and agree that it's a pain, however I have a work around for you (for dates).
1. Enter the data column with years as a Date format. This will require entering in dates ending in the year you want.
2. Format the data column as a custom format of "yyyy" to display only the year.
3. Select the two columns you want and plot the chart. Excel appears to recognise dates and uses it for the horizontal axis labels/ intervals.

Hope this helps.

Bob

I tried it and it works....but that is a terrible way to solve a problem. This is a bug, because there is no way excel can know when to make some column into and x and y axis. Instead like in Windows, it should give me the option to change a series from y to x. This is why Microsoft screws up their best effort. It took 4 years to test this product?

This response is not only inaccurate it is utterly false & irresponsible.

If you have nothing appropriate to offer, so be it - but please don't
intentionally submit misinformation.

Hi Eddie -

The most direct way is to select the data you want to plot then click the
Charts button in the Elements Gallery, pick a type & style. The specifics
vary depending on how your data is arranged as well as other variables. You
might want to look at Excel Help on the keyword: chart and explore some of
the information offered there.

I agree it is false to say no more charts. But I must admit having jsut spent the money to get new software, and played with charting capability in Excel 2008, it is extremely disappointing. The charts look pretty but they are inaccurate in depicting data. And having spent better part of my Sunday trying to make simple line charts work, I gave up and relied on Numbers 2008 to get the chart correctly depicted in my document (Word 2008, which thankfully let me past the Numbers chart:)) that I had to complete yesterday.

I think the person's response here is being tongue in cheek about the fact that charting in Excel 2008 is a tiresome exercise and for most practical purposes be impossible to use. A feature that has worked for over a decade in Excel has been badly mangled in this release. There is nothing in help that remotely explains how to select an x-axis correctly (I checked). Setting a column to read "yyyy" format, as Bob suggests, and then charting it is actually not a practical choice at all times; it is a workaround that may work sometimes. All line charts are not time series, and to assume that in a software of this complexity smacks of ignorance. This product should not have been released with such basic functionality deleted. I repeat this functionality is not new to Excel, how could it be omitted? A patch from Microsoft is desperately needed, and I hope the MVPs here can reach out to Microsoft to demonstrate to them the prioritized need for this patch.

Thanks

UNBELIEVABLE!!! The "error bar" bug remains in the latest update!
There is still no way to customize the error bars in Excel 2008 (v. 12.0.1)

Is there any missing feature coming back?

A

Ale

Dear all,
I believe that this first version of Office:mac 2008 is not yet designed for serious purposes and uses. Too many missing essential features, mainly from the point of view of custom objects (such as charts and error bars: how could someone work with charts, without being able to create custom types? and what about doing black/white charts without being able to fill them with patterns?), but not only...
Maybe the last update was already planned before all our messages, thus I would allow the microsoft team working on it to allow us to work properly in the future. I would suggest to keep the Office 2004 installation until this happens and take a little bit of patience...
Anyway, one thing is sure: I followed the "Technology Guarantee" program and I can say that technology has not yet been guaranteed...

We are sorry that we weren't able to get custom error bar support into the
12.0.1 release, but we are working hard on it.

Thanks,

Pat
