Office 2007 beta 2 Setup Error

N

Sorry about that, did not explain fully.

First, the office file you download is an executable OPPLUS-EN.EXE,
440MB in size. Lets say it's on the root of C:

Create a new folder, let's say on the root of C: called Office2007

Then, from the command prompt or Start/Run, type the following:

C:\OPPLUS-EN.EXE /extract:c:\Office2007
This will extract properly all the files into C:\Office2007

*Note, if you have winrar/winzip or similar on you system, and just
right click the .exe file and choose to "Extract here" or "Extract to"
option and specify the folder, this WILL NOT extract the files
properly, it will dump them all into a flat structure in the
destination location without recreating the sub-folders correctly, this
may be what some people are doing and hence the installation having
difficulty finding the correct file locations*

You can try at this point to run setup.exe, if it is still having
difficulty with error 1706, proceed as follows:

Use the /admin option on the setup.exe file in C:\Office2007 folder
(yes, I just put "a" before, apologies!)

C:\Office2007\setup .exe /admin

This bring up the Office Cutomization Tool, and choose the option to
create a new Setup customization file.

In here you can set options such as the install location, whether to
remove previous versions, specify Outlook Profiles etc etc. When you
have choosen what option you need, save the file, call it anything you
like, for example mysetup.msp

Just quit this tool after saving the file.

Then run mysetup.msp, and this starts the Office installation proper,
it is here it will ask for the locations of the individual office MSI
files if it cannot find them (I was installing on a partition different
to C: so maybe the beta got confused on this point). For instance, the
main Office MSI file in the example above would be
C:\Office2007\Office.en-us\OfficeMUI.msi, for outlook it would be
C:\Office2007\Outlook.en-us\OutlookMUI.msi, and so on for Word, Excel
etc.

After you point out the locations, the installation proceeds silently
and after a few minutes its complete.

Hope this helps.

Hi Noel,

Just a couple of thoughts, if I may, that may be of interest on the steps you outlined.

When using Setup /Admin to access the Office 2007 Customization Tool (OCT) you may want to first create a new folder within the
(Office Network Installation Point (that's the name of the the folder/structure you created in your steps using the /Extract switch
<g>). I've been using a folder named OCTs, so in your example where you created a CD image copy with /extract named C:\Office2007,
the new folder would be C:\Office2007\OCTs

When you create you .MSP customization files for Office 2007 save them to your new folder, then when you're ready to run setup you
can drop them into the \Updates folder (C:\Office2007\Updates in your example). When you then run Setup.exe in the C:\OFfice2007
folder it will automatically pickup the .MSP files in the \Updates folder and apply them.

As you mentioned WinZip/WinRAR extraction of the files will, with their default settings, not create a correct Office 2007 Beta 2 CD
Image and file/folder structure and the subsequent setup run can fail. It can also fail if folks try to install by double clicking
one of the Office .MSI files (there are several). Basically, bypassing Office 2007's Setup.exe is a bit risky <g>.

may be what some people are doing and hence the installation having
difficulty finding the correct file locations*

==============

Hi Noel,

Thanks again for your reply. I finally got it working...
Unfortunately, I did it in a very unscientific manner and introduced a
bunch of variables and I am not too sure which one physically resolved
my issue.

For the benefit of anyone else experiencing this problem here is what I
did.

1. I performed the steps that Noel provided around setting up an admin
file (setup /admin). However, when I ran the setup I selected an
Upgrade and received the same Error 1706.

2. I then used "Windows Install Clean Up" to attempt to clear any
legacy registry and install files related to Office 2007 Beta 2. And
then I re-ran the setup using the same MSP file from Attempt 1. This
time I selected "Customize" but left all the default values and
everything ran through smoothly.

I am not too sure if it is Noel's fix or the Windows Install Clean Up
that fixed things, but certainly something for alll of you to try.

Regards,

Jesse
