Student Select and Office for Mac 2008

My first suggestion is "Save every time you stop to think" so that you do
not lose so MUCH.

You will never get a computer application that NEVER crashes, so get in the
habit of "Command + s" every time you stop to think.

Edit carefully: Cut and Paste rather than Drag and Drop. There are bugs in
all of the applications that cause failures unless you are careful not to
have objects landing over the top of each other.

Eventually, you will learn by trial and error what tips it over. Basically
anything to do with pictures is suspect...

But mainly: Wait for Service Pack 2. Service Pack 1 is about two months
away (that's a guess...). It should fix the worst of the bugs. Service
Pack 2, I guess, will appear about July/August.

Hope this helps

While operating in Excel(Microsoft Office 2008 Home/Student) if I try and
change the window size it will freeze the entire laptop and I have to remove
the battery to get it restarted. Also on occasion Excel will crash and I will
get a message to the effect that Excel has encountered a problem and it needs
to be restarted losing all my current work.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OK, the first thing we can say is that you are very short of memory. Snap
in another 1GB of memory, and Office will run a lot more reliably.

Most of your other issues will be fixed by updates and service packs that
will start appearing from Microsoft any day now.

If you have the money go for 4GB.

The only other thing is the size of your hard drive. How full is it? The
system needs breathing room and if you've filled it up, this could be
slowing down performance too.

Hi
I have Office 2008, but have not got Mac OS X 10.5. If I install it today, can I later reinstall Office 2008, using the same key, after formating and reinstalling when I get Mac OS X 10.5?
Cheers

Yes, you can. Office for Mac does not get activated, unlike its Windows
counterpart, so the product key can be used again after the hard disk has
been reformatted.

How do you set up Microsoft Word to prevent double spacing?
The setting is for "single" spacing, however, when I'm trying to
type a single-spaced list, it wants to double space every line.
How can I avoid this problem?

Thank you for your help!

In the future, please start a new thread when you have a new question,
rather than adding onto an old thread.

It's not actually double-spacing that is the problem. Word changed the
default to add more space between paragraphs, so that each paragraph
will be single-spaced, but between paragraphs, you get extra space.
Paragraphs are created every time you hit enter.

To change in just this document, select all, go to Format | Paragraph.
Look down to the find the Spacing: After field, and change 10 to 0.

To change this in all documents created from now on, change the Normal
style.

First, select Format | Style. Normal should be selected.

Click on Modify--make sure "add to template" is CHECKED. You'll see a
Format menu in the bottom of the dialog--select Paragraph from it, and
change the Spacing: After setting from 10 to 0.

Is anyone also getting the problem when you best fit a line to an XY scatter plot the slope is different in 2008 than what it would be in 2004?

Trying to install Office mac 2008 Home & Student Edition on my mac. I am replacing Office 2004. Because I ran into this problem I have deleted Office 2008 and reinstalled two times and had the same problem after both installs. The problem is that when I open Excel it immediately and on its own opens every Excel file I have one after the other without stopping. The worksheets appear to be blank. It continues to load files without stopping until memory is full, the computer locks down and I have to turn off the computer and reboot. The other Office programs (Word, Power Point) open without any problem and i am able to select and retrieve files as needed or to start a new file. I have used Time Machine and pulled forward Office 2004 that was there before Office 2008 was installed. When I do that Excel and all Office programs work fine again. The problem with Office 2008 Excel happens every time I try to load Excel, even after rebooting. The computer is not on a network and this is not a server, etc. problem.

Have just installed Microsoft 2008 Home and Student Addition replacing Microsoft 2004. I cannot now open any of the MS programs – Word, Excel, etc. When I click on the Icon I get a pop-up window that is the Microsoft Office Set-up Assistant. I then fill in the fields and click on Continue. Immediately after that I get another pop-up that is a Microsoft Error Report saying Microsoft Set-up Assistant has encountered problems and needs to close. I have tried various ways to work around this to no avail. I went to another computer and registered the software with Microsoft and then rebooted on the computer with the problem. Still cannot get the new MSO 2008 programs to open. Would appreciate any help.

Usually when something like this happens you need to look at your system
files. Office relies on system files to work.

What version of Entourage and what OS are you using? If you installed
Leopard how did you install?

There are 3 types of installs:

1. Upgrade Mac OS X (the default upgrade method)*
2. Archive and Install
3. Erase and Install

* Just because it's the default doesn't mean it's the best option.

This page describes what each method does:

Options to Install Leopard
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/leo_options.html>

Have you applied the latest Apple combo updater for Tiger or Leopard?

P

Phil

Thanks for the response and suggestions. I am still unable to open MS Office 2008. I am using Mac OS 10.5.2 and Entourage 12.0.0. Not sure how Leopard was installed. Following your suggestion I applied the latest Apple combo update for Leopard. Rebooted and still could not get into OS with same result as described above. I then reinstalled MS Office 2008. The last step was with the Microsoft Office Set-up Assistant to fill the fields and Continue. This I did but immediately got the Error Report, encountered problems, need to close. After closing could still not get into any MSO 2000 programs. It is interesting that I was never able to get the the screen for registering the software with MS since the above mentioned message came up. Still stuck. Would appreciate any suggestions.
