Student Select and Office for Mac 2008

Thanks for the response and suggestions. I am still unable to open MS Office 2008. I am using Mac OS 10.5.2 and Entourage 12.0.0. Not sure how Leopard was installed. Following your suggestion I applied the latest Apple combo update for Leopard. Rebooted and still could not get into OS with same result as described above. I then reinstalled MS Office 2008. The last step was with the Microsoft Office Set-up Assistant to fill the fields and Continue. This I did but immediately got the Error Report, encountered problems, need to close. After closing could still not get into any MSO 2000 programs and with the same result after rebooting. It is interesting that I was never able to get the screen for registering the software with MS since the above-mentioned message came up. Still stuck. Would appreciate any suggestions.

How Leopard was installed could be your problem.
Following your suggestion I applied the latest Apple combo update
for Leopard. Rebooted and still could not get into OS with same result as

Microsoft Office Set-up Assistant to fill the fields and Continue. This I did

The Setup Assistant is failing for you. It is not necessary to use the Setup
Assistant. It is not necessary to register either.

"Registration" has nothing to do with the operation of the software - unlike
the Activation required for MS Windows software. It's little more than a
marketing tool.

I think your problem is still your system files because they will not open.
The next step is to do an "Archive & Install". If this fails, you need to do
an "Erase & Install".

Archive and Install

Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.

Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the
destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will
be the only one available).

Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and network
settings, select ³Archive and Install,² and then select ³Preserve Users and
Network Settings.²

Click Continue.

Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you¹d like to install, or
click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the
disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5, that's what
version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate
Combo Updater from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version.
After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any
additional updates.

I have a Macbook running Tiger.
I am running Office X.
I installed Office Mac 2008 Home and Student.
I chose not to remove Office X when prompted.
I now wish to remove Office X and all its little bits.
As my import of data into Office 2008 was successful, especially Entourage, I have qualms about reinstalling Office 2008 and selecting the remove option. Is there another way? I do not know if I can even find the old Office X install disk (probably if I look). Can I just drag Office X etc to trash? Or what?

Hi Sheldon -

I'm not sure why you interjected your question into this totally unrelated
thread, but base on what you describe you do *not* need to reinstall 2008.

The Remove Office utility is on your HD as well as the install disk but it
is run separately from the installer itself. When you launch Remove Office
it will locate all versions & give you the choice of which to remove.

You might check out some of the suggestions on the following page as they
pertain to Removing, but you won't be *installing* anything:)

Pro: Three licences, so three users can work at the same time. Much
cheaper!

Con: Can't connect to an Exchange Server.

Exchange Servers normally occur only in large companies, and you would know
if you had one, and it would affect only your work email.

Easy? :)

Please do not hijack other threads; your issue has nothing to do with
various editions of Mac Office, so please remember to create a new post the
next time you need to ask a question.

Messenger does not do audio/video chat (yet); in the meantime, you could try
other solutions such as Skype, as it is cross-platform and it works
beautifully. However, since you need to use MSN because your family uses it
as well, give aMSN a try. It is free and it allows you to chat with other
MSN users. The downside is that it is rather ugly, but then again, Microsoft
Messenger is not very likely to win a beauty pageant, either...

Hi,

All I can suggest is to use AMSN http://amsn.sf.net because currently right
now Microsoft is giving the Mac users the royal shafting with their lack of
MSN Messenger 7 lacking appearance.

I have had Office 2008 installed for 3 weeks and today tried to instal the downloaded upgrade 12.0.1. When I try to upgrade the installer stops at the select a destination. After it searches for the volume it comes back with "...cannot install... A version of the software required...was not found on this volume"
I only have the Macintosh HD volume which is were the Office 2008 was installed. Path: Macintosh HD/Applications/ MS Office 2008.
Any ideas how I can get the installer to select the volume? or can I do it manually somehow?

thanks Vic

How do you insert a picture from a scanner? I scan pictures and letters into Word quite often. It was in the Insert/Picture menu in Office 2004. I cannot find it anywhere in Office 2008. Both versions of Office are the Home & Student Edition.

C

CyberTaz

Scanning directly into a Word document required Twain support which was not
retained in Office 2008. You'll have to save your scan as a file then use
Insert/Picture - From File instead.

I don't know that it will make any difference, but if you can substantiate
that the loss of the feature is a detriment to your workflow I'd suggest
that you use Help> Send Feedback to ensure it's being tracked on MacBU's
radar... The more requests submitted the more likely it is to be reinstated
- but there are no guarantees:)

I have heard a lot of different opinions regarding Office 2008 on Mac. I have just switched back to Mac from PC, I'm running a MacBook 2.2Ghz.

Most of the professional reviews I have read about Office 2008 have been positive but many other user reviews have been extremely negative, with reports of bugs and constant crashes and unexpected quits, as well as time lags.

What is Microsoft's position on this and are there any planned updates to iron out these bugs? I have 8 days remaining on my Office 2004 trial before I have to decide whether or not to purchase Office 2008. I would have done it no questions asked until I read so many negative reviews...

Cheers

Hi Cartz -

The bottom line is that you can't rely on someone else to tell you what
*you* need. There's some degree of truth to what others have to say, but you
need to identify your needs & determine which product suits them best. You
also have the option of going with 2004 now & upgrading to 2008 later at a
reduced rate, whereas you can't "downgrade" - although you can return 2008
within the 'satisfaction guarantee' period & purchase 2004 instead.

Keep in mind that most of the postings you see from users are from those who
have experienced problems - those who have no problems rarely take the time
to post about how pleased they are. Many of the problems are actually the
result of issues that existed before installing the software as well as
improper preparation/installation in the first place. And then you always
have the contingent that are perennial complainers - they'll complain &
criticize no matter what:)

Any new release is going to have its share of "bugs" but most will be
resolved over time & many of those reported bugs are merely perceived
because the software is simply *different* than what the user is accustomed
to and expects... Or prefers.

Nobody here can tell you what Microsoft's "position" is because we're *not*
Microsoft & can't speak for the company. And the few 'Softies who pop in
here can only say so much. Experience has shown, however, that MS certainly
will do whatever they can to continue improvement of 2008. By the same
token, some of what certain users 'don't like' won't necessarily be changed
if it's an intended design difference.
