Windows cannot find C:\ (doc) Make sure you typed the name correct

After further investigation I found what I believe to be the exact cause of
this problem. Drum roll please........Business Contact Manager for Outlook.
I un-installed Business Contact Manager for Outlook and rebooted my computer
and no more problem.

If you have Business Contact Manager installed, try uninstalling it and see
if the problem goes away.

You may not have to un-install BCM after all. Seems there is an addin for
Word that can be hacked so you can continue to use BCM while resolving the
Word/document issue. Here is a message from MS that explains what's going on
and how to correct it.

Hi DonV,

Thanks for your reply and the detail testing steps.

However, based on my testing:
1. A computer with Windows Vista and Office 2007 Enterprise edition.
2. I install BCM for Outlook 2007. The BCM version is 3.00.5828.00. The
Outlook version is 12.0.6023.5000. The Office 2007 version is
12.0.6017.5000.
3. I Start Outlook 2007 with BCM > double click a Word document icon to open
it > it is opened successfully. I didn't get the error
"Windows cannot find <filename>.".

It seems that the issue may also be related to other applications on your
computer.

After installing the BCM for Outlook, I found that it will add an addin in
Word 2007. Please remove this addin in Word 2007 to see if it
works fine on your computer.

1. Go to start > run > type regedit, press ENTER.
2. Locate the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\.
3. Right click the BCM related registry key and choose Export to backup it.
And then delete this BCM related registry key.
4. Exit Word 2007. Double click a Word document icon to open it again. What
is the result?

If it still doesn't work, please also help me to collect the process monitor
log file.

- Download procmon.exe
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processmonitor.mspx
- Exit all running applications. Run procmon.exe
- Stop the current logging by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Clear the current log by clicking on the eraser button.
- Start the capturing by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Double click a Word document icon. When you get the error "windows cannot
find <filename>", stop the capturing by clicking on the
magnifying glass button.
- Click the File menu > Save to save the file as Issue.pml.
- Zip up and send the resulting log files to me at (e-mail address removed).

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

It's extraordinary that 10 months or more after I first hit this issue, the
problem still exists with no hint as to the cause, no successful workaround
and no sign from Microsoft that there is a solution imminent or that it is
being taken seriously (informal hints and promises about SP1 excepted).

I've come across many bugs over the years. Most are solved within days; some
take a month or so. This one - which makes a vital program virtually unusable
- seems to exist in some sort of void.

Over three hours to install Vista SP1 and Office SP1 (also now available).
The exact same problem remains. No change.

How can we get someone to take this fault seriously - even simply to
acknowledge that it exists?

Call Microsoft and report it as a bug. That way you will (eventually) get it
escalated to a developer (but you will need perseverance). Our problem is
that we don't have the problem to diagnose and don't have the lab
facitilities to test for the bug.

They will need to know everything about your network, servers, firewalls,
AV, etc.

There's a workaround in another thread further up with the same subject line. Re: Windows cannot find C:\ (doc) Make sure you typed the name cor here a link to it.

Hi DonV
Your message is somewhat unclear. I haven't found any workable workaround in
any other thread - though there are some which now also refer to this problem.

Hi Terry
I have twice been through the Microsoft procedure for reporting errors and
seeking help. On both occasions I have had no reply or assistance at all.

I guess reading is a little too much like work so here it is. I followed
steps 1-4 and the problem went away. I'm thinking this may well work for you
too.

Thanks for clarifying. (No need to get spiky! It was just that I found the
reference in your previous post unclear.)

The BCM solution doesn't work as (a) I don't have BCM (b) The last two of
these (Word\Addins\ ) are not on my system:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\

I shall try the Process check.

I also have this problem.
What a headache it is!!!
Observing commentaries on the 'net, there's been an appauling lack of
response from Microsoft on this.
Shocking we're expected to pay top dollar for rubbish like this.
I think I might have been better off sticking with XP and Office 2003 then
at least they would work adequately.

In every instance this has proved to be an incompatibility with third party
utilities - especially network tools.

Really? What specific products have been identified as causing this problem?
Can you direct me to a Knowledge Base article that defines?
Has any resolution path been provided yet?
I don't have any specific "network tools" nor Outlook Business Contact
Manager (interesting you seem to refer to this MICROSOFT product as a 3rd
party utility!!!!) installed.
I remain affirmed of my original view.

T

Terry Farrell

As the problem is an incompatibility with a tool that is not part of Office,
I refer to it as a third party utility or tool. What's the problem with
that? BCM is a Microsoft tool that causes the problem but I wasn't referring
to that.

One utility that I am aware of that causes this problem is the Pure Networks
utility. I don't have a list nor do I have time to search the knowledge base
to find them either (unless you want to pay for consultancy work?).

I can report that I am plagued with the exact same issue. It is extremely
vexing that I can open Word documents within the program (File -> Open) but
not through Windows Explorer. I can also confirm that disabling AV (or
completely uninstalling it even) has no effect.

Here's hoping that SP1 comes soon with the proper fix.

T

Terry Farrell

This is complete nonsense because it isn't attached to any thread and most
of the important details are missing. But if I can guess correctly, you need
to uninstall BCM in Office 2007.
