Windows cannot find C:\ (doc) Make sure you typed the name correct

I'm sorry Terry - you're quite right of course.
With further research I managed to find a solution that worked for me!
There WAS a very good KB page that resolved in my case when I deleted all
the Word add-ins registry keys.
Here's the link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/921541
I conclude that it was a global Word Add-In that had some incompatibility
with 2007 that was at cause in this instance.
Glad to have it sorted. :)
Hope this helps others.

I'm pleased that you found the solution. I'll make a note of the KB article
too for future use. Thanks for reporting back.

Hurray!

Many thanks - this has finally led me to the solution (I hope).
I have used the instructions in this very useful KB article 921541 at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/921541 to remove a COM add in.
The guilty party was Sperry software A COM Add-in for Always BCC for Outlook
2007 (which as far as I can see shouldn't be doing anything in Word at all)
I exported, deleted, restored and selectively ticked and unticked as
described in the article.

A long-lasting worry finally eneded (fingers crossed).

Thanks to all who have contributed and helped.

Now when will this be released?
because this is really annoying, considering that Word is practically the
only program I use on a daily basis.

My problems started when I was messing in a 500+ page document. I've tried
removing spyware, running a repair on Office 2007, and making sure I didn't
have any viruses and the problem hasn't gone away.

I'd install Office 2003 - if Vista would let me (I like 2003's GUI better
anyway).

Weeks ago. Do you not run Windows Update?

I think I do, but my laptop is new and I've never used Vista before, so I
don't know what it's doing and what it's not doing. I will
check....somehow... I'm a computer user, not a computer fixer.

thank you

Okay, I removed the addin, but what did I just remove? Will this destroy my
documents or impare the ability of Word to function in _OTHER_ ways?

Just because you haven't seen a problem, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I
have XP Pro and recently installed Office 2007. My unique issue (in this
thread) has not been raised yet. When I go to the my Start Menu, select "My
Recent Documents," and choose any of my documents I recently had open (I have
only had problems with the .docx's so far) I get that message also. It opens
Word, but then I have to go to Word's recent documents and open it from
there. A few more clicks, but like you said, annoying.

Delete the Word DataKey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

Then from Start, Run (Winkey+R) type in

winword /r

and press enter. Open Word and test aging.

I find that problems come from Learning Essential. When I remove
Learning Essential, my word and excel work properly. But after trying
to install Learning Essentials 2.0, errors occur again. "windows
cannot find....make sure...". Anyone can help me?

I tried to find the DataKey but am at a loss as to where it would be. I don't
have a folder "Software" and am not sure what HKEY_CURRENT_USER means either.
Thanks.

It's part of the Windows Registry. From Start, Run, type in

regedit

and press enter. You can navigate down to the Word Data key and delete it.
Be EXTREMELY careful that you delete the correct key. Windows is not
forgiving if you make a mistake in the registry.

I have tried all suggested work arounds with no luck. Had no Addins to remove from registry. Deleted data and option registry entries, reset global templats. My startup folders were empty in both user and program files paths. Nothing worked. I also have VISTA SP1 and OFFICE SP1 installed.

One thing I did notice is that my paths were slightly different from the KB article. I have a laptop and see that I all my AppData is stored under a Roaming folder rather than the Local folder.

Could there be an issue with a roaming profile?

Have you tried starting Word in Safe mode? Hold down the Ctrl key as Word is
starting, click Yes to starting in Safe mode, and see if it works.

How are you trying to open the file? From Word? From Windows Explorer? By
double-clicking an attachment? Some other way?

When you say "file not opening", what exactly happens? An error message?
Nothing at all?

I have a similar problem but after days of troubleshooting, the real problem
was from my HP PSC 2410 default printer. To resolve this issue make a non HP
printer the default printer. I think the HP print driver is not compatible
with Vista OS and Microsoft Office products. Hope this helps!!!

I am suffering a similar problem, but it is between Windows Vista Ultimate
and SPSS 16.0.2.

Every time I click to open an SPSS file (with such extensions as .sav, .sps,
..spv) from Windows Explorer, the error message appears. Even after
reinstalling Windows Vista and SPSS, the problem persists.

Really looking forward to a solution that really works.

You may not have to un-install BCM after all. Seems there is an addin for
Word that can be hacked so you can continue to use BCM while resolving the
Word/document issue. Here is a message from MS that explains what's going on
and how to correct it.

Hi DonV,

Thanks for your reply and the detail testing steps.

However, based on my testing:
1. A computer with Windows Vista and Office 2007 Enterprise edition.
2. I install BCM for Outlook 2007. The BCM version is 3.00.5828.00. The
Outlook version is 12.0.6023.5000. The Office 2007 version is
12.0.6017.5000.
3. I Start Outlook 2007 with BCM > double click a Word document icon to open
it > it is opened successfully. I didn't get the error
"Windows cannot find <filename>.".

It seems that the issue may also be related to other applications on your
computer.

After installing the BCM for Outlook, I found that it will add an addin in
Word 2007. Please remove this addin in Word 2007 to see if it
works fine on your computer.

1. Go to start > run > type regedit, press ENTER.
2. Locate the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\.
3. Right click the BCM related registry key and choose Export to backup it.
And then delete this BCM related registry key.
4. Exit Word 2007. Double click a Word document icon to open it again. What
is the result?

If it still doesn't work, please also help me to collect the process monitor
log file.

- Download procmon.exe
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processmonitor.mspx
- Exit all running applications. Run procmon.exe
- Stop the current logging by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Clear the current log by clicking on the eraser button.
- Start the capturing by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Double click a Word document icon. When you get the error "windows cannot
find <filename>", stop the capturing by clicking on the
magnifying glass button.
- Click the File menu > Save to save the file as Issue.pml.
- Zip up and send the resulting log files to me at (e-mail address removed).

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,

I anadvertenly sent the last message before typing in that the removal of the

Unfortunately, Vista SP1, which I installed on 3/24/08, does not solve the
"Windows cannot find..." problem and it is not restricted to Windows
programs. I have gotten this error msg when opening several other programs as
well as when clicking on links from email msgs. E.G.:
http://www.youtube.com... and http://www.ups.com/Web Tracking/....
In all instances, the program or link has opened anyway, then when
closed, the error msg is still there, having been lurking beneath the other
window and one has to close it separately. Tonight (5/30/08), which is about
to turn into tomorrow, the bug is still bugging away.
